Engineering is an intellectually demanding profession, mainly because of the wide range of skills that are needed to be employed; students are expected to be good at mathematics, to have a sound grasp of basic sciences, to be inventive and creative, to be able to sell ideas to clients and colleagues and, in due course, to organise and lead fellow professionals.
Level 1: Introductory mathematics; materials and mechanics; energy conversion; engineering communication design and practice; applied mechanics; electrical circuits and devices; computer programming for engineers; other approved subjects. Level 2: Engineering mathematics; materials and structures; electronics and microprocessors; fluid mechanics and thermodynamics; electrical and mechanical systems; engineering design and practice. Level 3: Engineering design and practice; 3 courses from: fluid mechanics; geotechnics; stress analysis; engineering materials; electromechanical systems; circuits, signals and systems; microcontrollers and their applications; approved subject; engineering design and practice; 3 courses from: economics, resource and safety management; mechanics of structures; civil engineering practice with geology field course; design of structural elements; dynamics; thermodynamics; electrical power engineering; digital electronic systems; software engineering; communications engineering; approved subject. Candidates may proceed at their own pace through the 3 levels of this programme over 4 years; those who do well at Levels 1 and 2 may transfer to a BEng programme before studying at Level 3.
