Engineering is an intellectually demanding profession, mainly because of the wide range of skills that are needed to be employed; students are expected to be good at mathematics, to have a sound grasp of basic sciences, to be inventive and creative, to be able to sell ideas to clients and colleagues and, in due course, to organise and lead fellow professionals.
Level 1: Engineering mathematics and computing; materials and mechanics; energy conversion; engineering communication design and practice; applied mechanics; electrical circuits and devices. Level 2: Engineering mathematics; materials and structures; electronics and microprocessors; fluid mechanics and thermodynamics; electrical and mechanical systems; engineering design and practice. Level 3: Engineering mathematics; engineering design and practice; electromechanical systems; circuits, signals and systems; microcontrollers and their applications; approved European language; economics, resource and safety management; at least 3 courses from: communications engineering; electrical power engineering; digital electronic systems; software engineering; approved European language. Level 4: Engineering project; electromechanical systems; circuits, signals and systems; microcontrollers and applications; and at least 3 courses from: safety and reliability engineering; advanced control engineering; electrical power engineering; electrical machines and drives; communications engineering; optical engineering; analogue VLSI or digital VLSI; analogue electronic systems; signal processing; artificial intelligence in engineering; approved course; engineering design and practice; 1 new course from: electrical power engineering; digital electronic systems; software engineering; communications engineering; engineering management; functions of management; approved course; or engineering project abroad. Suitable candidates may transfer to the MEng in the 1st 2 years.
