Course Description
This programme is open to graduates in architecture and engineering who are interested in architectural design that proceeds from innovative technologies, and who wish to develop skills and pursue knowledge in architectural design research that is located in new production paradigms. Phase 1 of the programme encompasses the seminar courses, core studio workshops and projects, and supervised research. Phase 2 consists of further supervised individual research and design and the Design Dissertation for the MA or MArch. The programme takes place over five terms. Phase 1 covers Terms 1 and 2, which offer exposure to a wide range of processes, theories and techniques that are designed to help students develop their skills, explore across the boundaries of disciplines and practices, and engage with theoretical discourses in emergent technologies. Students are also encouraged to attend relevant courses offered by the Graduate School and by General Studies and Technical Studies. Successful completion of Phase 1 is the condition of progress to Phase 2 of the programme. In term 1 emphasis is placed on the development of skills in structuring research, and on modeling and analysis with particular respect to geometry. In term 2 the focus is on materiality-related experimental design techniques as a method of research. During term 2 individual research topics and projects are evolved, later to become part of Design Dissertation developed in Phase 2 of the programme. During Phase 1, seminars will be conducted on the following topics: Emergence and Design; History of Design and Technology; and Biomimetics and Material Technologies. Phase 2 covers Terms 3, 4 and 5. During this phase students develop an individual thesis, working with faculty members and advisers. Seminars and tutorials will guide the progress of the thesis.
