This carefully-focused course develops and expands the candidate's abilities to work as a professional ecologist in the increasingly important field of impact assessment; the course is aimed at ecologists developing or beginning their career in this challenging area of applied ecology; the course has developed from a high quality undergraduate programme in ecological assessment; the course addresses skill gaps identified by the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and the British Ecological Society, in terms of: biological survey; data interpretation; environmental legislation; and professional practice.
PGCert modules include: Introduction to field biology; survey design, management and costing; field biology: specialist groups; data analysis, interpretation and management; PGDip modules include: planning, policy and legislation; ecological impact assessment; mitigation and monitoring; professional practice in EcIA; MSc students research an aspect of ecological impact assessment, supervised by a member of the teaching staff; potential topics in this exciting field are many and varied; it could be related to a project upon which students are working; alternatively topics could be based on any aspect of the EcIA process from the testing and evaluation of survey methodology to the effectiveness of mitigation techniques.
