This course is particularly relevant to those who wish to pursue a career, or enhance their qualifications, in relation to children; students who wish to teach are able to apply to the postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) (Early Years) at the College from this degree course; those completing the 3 year course with a satisfactory placement report in each setting also achieve Professional Practice status, which enables them to work in early years settings as a qualified member of staff; the course has been approved for this purpose through the Department for Education and Skills (DfES); the programme aims to provide students with a high level of academic knowledge and practical skills in the development and education of young children; it also concentrates on helping them develop important management skills with children; success in this field requires an in-depth understanding of children's social, physical, emotional and intellectual needs; provision must be planned against a background of changing legislation and fluctuating trends in public opinion; in addition, the students needs to develop appropriate management skills, to be able to plan strategies within the constraints of each organisation; working within a professional capacity in a wide variety of childcare organisations is particularly rewarding for those wishing to make a significant contribution to children's development; a wide range of placements are available during the course including nurseries, playgroups, before and after school schemes, hospitals, schools and more specialist community and charitable organisations; the student gains extensive experience of working with children based upon developing and extending knowledge and skills.
Year 1: The 1st year concentrates on developing an understanding of the characteristics of childhood and the ways in which children's needs are met; skills are developed for working with young children and other care professionals; the fundamentals of research and study skills are also developed during this year. Year 2: in the 2nd year the programme concentrates upon developing a depth of understanding and focuses on ways of enhancing children's development through the creation of learning opportunities; a range of options are available to choose from according to future career aspirations. Year 3: in the 3rd year the programme looks at wider strategic and philosophical issues of a contemporary nature, including the impact of legislation and social trends on childcare provision; the broader European and global contexts within modules are also examined; a choice from specialist options can be made which is relevant to personal interests or intended employment; a substantial dissertation on a topic of personal choice related to children is produced.
