The course aims to improve the understanding and knowledge of teachers working with pupils who have special educational needs (SEN) and raise awareness of the factors involved in developing an inclusive school; it develops understanding of the 4 categories of SEN as described in the SEN Code of Practice for Wales (2002) and assists in developing professional responses to a diverse range of individual learning needs; the main focus is to equip participants to develop their professional responses, particularly in terms of: Early identification, assessment and intervention; maximising curriculum access and supporting high standards, including personalised pupil learning; promoting positive social and emotional development and behaviour and responding to the voice of the learner; effective inter-professional working, including with parents.
All years: Issues addressed include: legislation, policy, provision and practice; changing perceptions of SEN and of related terminology, including in relation to inclusive practice and equality of opportunity, is examined and evaluated.
