In the UK it is estimated that 1/3 of psychiatric patients with serious mental illness have a substance misuse problem and half of clients engaged with the drug and alcohol sector have some form of mental health problem; this course is open to health and social care professionals working with this client group, either directly or indirectly, within the statutory and voluntary sectors; this course is flexible and includes: online materials and discussion areas to support studies; students can study as part of a multidisciplinary cohort from the statutory and non-statutory sectors; the course builds on the subjects covered in the postgraduate certificate offering students the opportunity of exploring treatment systems and approaches in more detail.
