Year 1: This year is all about laying the vital foundation stones; storytelling is the central theme; each project and module is designed to enhance students ability to tell stories as well as developing practical skills in handling cameras, sound and editing equipment; students are also introduced to key theoretical and historical issues surrounding documentary in film and television. Year 2: Students build on practical film making skills (especially in the field of observation); through research and study students develop further expertise in the use of cameras, sound and editing; film projects explore ideas of The City and contemporary documentary practice; close links with broadcasters and production companies provide a good understanding of the professional world and current modes of documentary production; continuing studies in cultural theory and documentary history support the choice of a topic for the year 3 dissertation. Year 3: Advanced work leading to both a major written text and 2 major film projects, supported by workshops, seminars and tutorials.
