Digital Animation is a growing medium used in a range of production areas and this programme introduces students to the technology and skills needed to successfully enter this industry. The programme focuses on the wider application of animation practices enabling progression to a range of employment roles. In year 1: the programme equips them with the understanding and appreciation for evolving digital toolsets and how individual creativity can be deployed within a multidisciplinary role within animation production. They will develop a broad range of technical skills in the practical aspects of animation, including studio production techniques covering: preproduction, editing, 2D and 3D stop-motion animation. They will also study the traditional animation techniques and the general principles of animation and fine art drawing practices. Areas of study: pre-production, digital applications /editing, 2D techniques and 3D stop-motion, computer generated animation, traditional animation techniques and the principles of animation, fine art drawing, cultural animation and film theory. In year 2: they will continue to build on and refine their technical skills and address the subject areas in more depth. As well as building on the advanced technical animation tool set for character animation and audio production, they will also cover script and creative narratives and visual research for commercial animation, title sequences, supported by political and cultural animation and film theory. Areas of study: script and creative narrative, character animation and 3D computer generated animation, visual research for commercial animation, title sequences design, political cultural ideological representations, researching professional practices. In year 3: they will produce a substantial digital animation project and a dissertation. The outcomes are presented at the southend film festival which is supported by the BFI and also at London graduate shows. Areas of study: final major project, storyboarding and animatic, dissertation, professional practices and preparation.
Students who are either working or have achieved a level 3 or overseas equivalent, invited to a portfolio interview, a 160 UCAS points from at least 2 GCE A- levels, BTEC National Diploma or Access Higher Education Diploma, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, GCSE English Language Grade C or above, Level 3 Art and Design such as the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Animation).
