This programme offers a route to the mandatory TDA-approved Teacher of the Deaf qualification should students wish to obtain the qualification, and is aimed at both deaf and hearing teachers; the school actively encourages suitable qualified deaf applicants, and provides appropriate access and support arrangements; the programme addresses the fundamental issues of language development, communication, achievement and good practice and provides teachers of the deaf with the specialist knowledge and skills they need to work across a range of settings in deaf education; the programme focuses on the importance of developing age-appropriate language, whether signed or spoken, where visual-gestural language is considered as strength rather than a weakness; a central theme of this provision is that the establishment of effective communication as a basis for cognitive development and access to the curriculum must be an educational priority for all deaf children; this school delivers the programme through distance learning materials, supported by regional tutorials and regular day schools.
