With the ever increasing pressure and repair bills, DIY is becoming more popular. With this course, you will be able to learn how to carry out basic engineering operations using a range of machinery and hand tools akin to an engineering workshop. Skill disciplines taught including welding, machining, fitting, use of apoxy adhesives, grinding and metal finishing processes. This course is designed to service the needs of both the inexpereinced and regular DIY enthusiasts. The course covers an introduction to the following basic engineering processes: Safety Requirements Principles, procedures and equipment required for marking out, measuring, filing, cutting, drilling, welding, brazing, turning, milling and the surface grinding of engineering materials. Hands on experience of each process (individual practising time on each process will be limited to the availability of equipment). It is acceptable for persons to join this course with the intention of using the College equipment for the manufacturing of their own work ie:- model making. This practice must be agreed with the tutor before starting and the person must demonstrate that they are fully conversant with the safety requirements and the operation of the equipment that they intend to use. The materials used for these activities will be supplied by the individual. A College Certificate will be awarded on request. A typical lesson would be a short talk about the principles of the process, the equipments used, any safety aspects and operating techniques required for that evenings activity followed by a practical demonstration with 'hands on' practise. There may not be sufficient equipment for all participants to use the same equipment at the same time. The course will enable a participant to be aware of basic process principles, recognise equipment, demonstrate an understanding of the techniques within an engineering environment & have had some introductory hands on experience. The knowledge and skills acquired can be used for home or employment reasons.
