Course Venue: Royal College Of Art , London, SW7 2EU
Awarding body: Royal College of Art
Course Description
The department of Curating Contemporary Art is committed to a theoretical, historical and practical examination of the display and reception of art since the 1960s. The department welcomes applications for MPhil and MPhil leading to PhD research in subject areas that conform to the department's research interests and which also relate to the specialisation of one or more of the members of staff. Research students are recruited to existing areas of strength or expertise, and the department will not accept a research project it is unable to supervise, although it may on occasion engage specialist external supervisors. It is hoped that potential research applicants will in turn be able to contribute to the academic life of the department by participating in the department's ongoing research seminars and projects. It is important to remember that your project proposal may need careful consideration and revision before you are ready to apply to the College; places may be offered subject to revision of the proposal following the interview process. The department will consider supervision for exhibition projects as part of an MPhil/PhD application only if it has a clearly articulated research question and the exhibition flows directly from the research process. Like the MA programme, postgraduate research in the CCA department can have both academic and practice-based components. Applicants should also consider whether they might be more appropriately based in a history of art department, as 'contemporary art' here refers to work made after 1960 that has a direct bearing on current artistic or curatorial practice.
