The cultural studies course covers questions on what is meant by culture; the importance of identity and belonging; how the new media and rise of global capitalism relate to the culture wars of today; and how tradition and heritage are represented in the mass media; students discuss how the view that the world is changing more rapidly than at any other point in history; Canterbury is the closest British university city to mainland Europe, and the proximity to the channel ports and Ashford international station means students can arrive in France in just a couple of hours; there are many French-speaking students on campus, so students get a better chance to immerse themselves in the language than at any other university in the country.

Stage 2/3: Modernity; popular culture, media and society; advanced language 1a; French: advanced language 2a; 2 from: dissertation; the imagination: studies in culture and creativity; literature, culture and society; options.
