The Research Centre in Cultural, Communication and Media Studies has a strong emphasis on the contemporary construction of identity and a shared engagement with Cultural Studies methodologies. Research strengths include Ethnicity and Film; National Identity; Cultural Icons; Material and Visual Culture; and Reflexive Practice in Creative Writing for page, screen and radio. Staff research projects are disseminated through publications, creative projects and the presentation of papers at national and international conferences, many at the invitation of societies and organisations representing American Studies, English and Media and Film. Staff research expertise is predominantly in the fields of American Studies, English and Media, Film and Popular Culture. Research projects within American Studies include: transatlantic portraiture; slave narratives; representations of 9/11; and Americanisation and culture. Members of the Centre are engaged in research projects on British literature and culture across a range of historical periods and from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Recent projects within media and film include an edited collection of essays, Drugs and Popular Culture. The Centre has links with the cultural industries and undertakes cultural advisory work, for example in relation to museum education, curating and media advocacy. The research culture offers opportunities such as a discussion group on 'new cultural keywords', whilst conferences organised include Queer People 3, Cambridge University; the Winchester Writers' Conference; an international conference on Violent Film; and a symposium on Icons and Celebrity. The Centre continues to work on research projects with an interest in cultural icons and the notion of the celebrity including: King Arthur, Ingmar Bergman, Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter and William Shakespeare.
