Course Description
For graduates in a related social science discipline who wish to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of key theoretical debates in this important and expanding area. The Certificate and Diploma stages are primarily classroom based taught stages comprising a total of eight modules. A further double module involves the writing of a research proposal, which provides the basis for the Masters stage. The course is designed to enable students to: Explore key theoretical concepts & empirical debates in contemporary social sciences & their implications for criminological theory & practice. Understand the principles of research design & strategy. Critically assess the contribution of research to understandings of crime & criminal justice. Understand the relative merits & relationships of different research tools. Develop the capability to design, manage, implement & disseminate a research project to a professional standard. Develop key skills in computing, word-processing, transcription, bibliographic searches & referencing. Confidently disseminate research findings & proceed to further academic study at doctoral level or to employment in an appropriate environment. Some modules may be taken as stand-alone short courses. Those who accumulate individual modules may apply for accreditation towards the award of the Certificate or the Diploma.

Assessment method
Assessment methods include traditional essays, reports, individual and group presentations and computer based exercises. The Masters stage is assessed by the dissertation.
Entry Requirements
Normally a good honours degree or equivalent in a related social science discipline. Professional qualifications and/or substantial professional experience in an appropriate environment will also be considered.
