The course is concerned with the study of criminal behaviour and the process of collating, examining and presenting psychological evidence in criminal trials; students are given a foundation in the theories and practice of psychology, the main focus of student studies is the practical application of psychology in the context of crime and the legal system; students study definitions of crime, who commits crime, the assessment and treatment of criminal behaviour, juvenile delinquency, legal psychology, and psychology and the courts; the course equips students with the knowledge and understanding for a range of careers including: the prison service, health, the police, the probation service, the judicial system, private consultancy and education, and will enable you to go on to further study; the applied nature of criminological and forensic psychology is stressed throughout the course and learners carry out work placements in approved settings in the 1st and final years; learners are given a full understanding of the theories and principles of forensic psychology and learn how these are applied in the legal and criminal setting; students learn methods for collating, assessing and analysing data and the effective communication of this data; a placement gives students the opportunity to explore the relationship between the academic study of psychology and the application of this knowledge in the workplace and provide them with an insight into how professionals operate within a work setting.
Levels 1 and 2: six modules in each year including: Psychology and crime; criminological perspectives; cognitive psychology; personality and development; understanding the person; research methods and biopsychology; students complete a 35 hour work experience placement in a setting related to the criminal justice system. Level 3: Core module: forensic psychology; students also carry out a programme of work-based learning which may include a criminal justice-related placement and a small-scale applied piece of research based on work placement; learners also complete an independent piece of research and study 1 option from abnormal psychology, assessment of personality or psychometric testing potentially leading to level A certification.
