The ethos of this course is to increase provision for higher level fine art education within the locale and to offer this opportunity to those for whom travel and full time attendance are not an option; the extension of opportunities to groups within the population and the development of vocational studies at degree level are limited in Somerset to subject areas that have a conventional industrial base; this degree can be located within an artistic community that is abundant with artists working in many small scale ventures; the course is focused on the following 2-dimensional art forms: painting; drawing; printmaking; photography; emphasis can be placed on a medium of the student's own choice as progression through the course is achieved; students are also encouraged to work outside of conventional mediums where appropriate, including the use of video installation and mixed media; the course broadly covers the knowledge and practical experience needed to enable the student to begin practising as a fine artist; students are therefore expected to make regular visits to galleries both locally and in London; the course comprises studio based work, professional development and academic study.
