Modules

Year 1: The central focus is on preproduction activities and positions ideas, innovation, experimentation, image and identity as fundamental to the creative process and the application of these ideas toward composition and arrangement; a programme of theory includes listening, popular culture and 20th century music; workshops introduce improvisation, instrument building, basic electronics and the skills needed to master pre-production facilities. Year 2: students are introduced to essential aspects of the music business and produce music media projects using digital video, graphics and internet media; professional practice studies provide an awareness of the financial and legal aspects of the industry; advanced workshops offer relevant media facilities and post-production audio technologies. Year 3: students undertake advanced research leading to a written dissertation or professional case study and also engage in the production of a major recorded work worthy of publication and performance; the discourse continues to develop and reinforce students understanding of sound and music, examining the sociology and economic structure of the creative music, commercial and performance industry; promotional ability and performance skills are further developed later in the year.
