This course offers the opportunity to engage with laser technology in order to aid and assist the development of design concepts. Students will work in the inspirational environment of the School of Art Design where the course is kept flexible to individual requirements under the supervision of a skilled and creative technician.

It is ideal for beginners seeking a new skill, practitioners seeking professional development, tutors requiring key knowledge to share with others or students with a particular idea to develop. Through practical sessions you will learn to:

Understand the capabilities of laser technology

Prepare drawings for outputting using 2D computer software

Select and use appropriate materials for the laser cutter/engraver

Design and create samples for your work and portfolio.

Full technical support will be provided throughout, as will a range of materials suitable for laser cutting/engraving for you to experiment with. The Laser Resource Studio at NTU is equipped with a flat bed 50w laser with a cutting area of 146cm x 97cm and will cut or engrave into textiles, paper, card, acrylic and some types of wood.  Additionally, a vast library of laser cut and engraved samples and related publications will be available for inspiration.

It is recommended that participants have some basic knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop, but previous knowledge of lasers is not necessary.
