A two year course designed to give you effective training in the management of conservation sites and the wider countryside along with the practical skills necessary to pursue a career within the environmental sector. About the course: This course uses the 300 hectare college estate and farm, which has woodland, rivers, ponds and wildlife habitats that have been successfully managed for the past 30 years. In addition, the countryside department makes use of local wildlife and nature reserves for practical conservation work. This is a course with both theory and practical elements. You will be expected to demonstrate a high level of interest and commitment, together with some practical experience (probably voluntary) or leisure interest, when invited to discuss your application with countryside staff. As part of the course students undertake a four week work experience placement in industry. After successful completion of the course, many students progress onto degree level study or enter into employment. The course includes:Biodiversity and sustainability, Habitat management, Environmental protection, Recreation and land use, Ecology and conservation of wildlife populations, Game management, Estate skills, Woodland management, Business project, Lectures/demonstrations/laboratory work, Field trips, Practical work off-site, Visiting speakers, Work placement, Careers advice, Functional skills in Maths, English or ICT (dependent on previous qualifications). Additional qualifications may be offered to enhance employment prospects. Health and safety certificate, Chainsaw and spraying qualifications.
4 GCSEs C or above preferably including English, Maths and Science or A City & Guilds National Certificate (or equivalent qualification) or Level 2 Diploma, Appropriate practical experience, Career changers welcome.
