The course is for students with a specific interest in these disciplines that are considering progression to professional qualifications in counselling; psychology is a core component of counselling and by studying on this course students learn about the interaction between the 2; learners build a critical understanding of counselling and psychological theories, methods and debates, and gain an insight into the range of applications of counselling psychology; students develop knowledge of research methods used in psychology and enhance skills in using these methods on specific research problems in the context of an awareness of relevant ethical issues; learners also acquire a range of key transferable skills in numeracy, IT, group work, oral and written communications and presentation skills; the course provides the knowledge and understanding of psychology and counselling that enables learners to undertake further professional qualifications in either field; a number of sessions are in the form of workshops which involve analysis of life events and role playing of various scenarios using pre-prepared case study material; students develop self-awareness and learn about the place of personal experience in the counselling process; in addition, learners study broader social issues that impact on the counsellor�s role, such as assumptions, stereotyping, diversity and prejudice; students are required to secure and complete a work placement in an approved setting in your final year.
Levels 1 and 2 core modules in psychology: Cognitive psychology; social and critical psychology; personality and developmental psychology; biopsychology; In addition, students learn research methods and study skills; students also study modules specific to the field of counselling including: Counselling concepts; coaching for life skills; stress and transition; research methods for counselling. Level 3: Professional issues; skills and practice in counselling; abnormal psychology; personal study project; students also carry out a work-based learning module which offers an insight into counselling in a professional context.
