Course Description
The MSc Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility offers an international perspective on these two key areas which are of fundamental importance to businesses and society globally. This programme is designed to provide a sound understanding of corporate governance and corporate social responsibility from corporate, investor and stakeholder perspectives. Corporate governance is an exciting area, fast developing to accommodate the needs of a changing business environment. Investor expectations are more demanding than ever before, and the cost to companies that ignore the benefits of good corporate governance can be high. There has also been an increasing emphasis on corporate social responsibility and the recognition that companies need to be accountable to wider stakeholder interests and to the society in which they operate. This programme considers all these issues in detail and is relevant for a wide variety of careers in business and the investment sector, or for those considering a career in research. The academics teaching on the programme are leading international experts in the field. They bring their expertise and knowledge to a programme which we believe is leading edge in its coverage and content. The Centre for Corporate Governance Research has strong international links, for example, working with the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on corporate governance related issues.

Assessment method
The taught modules contribute two-thirds of the final assessment for the MSc. The dissertation contributes one third. The taught modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and examinations. Coursework can take a variety of forms, including reports, essays, group presentations, class tests and assignments. In addition to traditional lectures, we use case study methods, seminars and self-learning groups, where fuller analysis and discussion occurs and important skills such as critical analysis, argument and synthesis are developed. Case studies and guest speakers are used as a means of relating theory to practical situations and you will often work on an assignment in small groups to develop problem-solving and inter-personal skills. You will be required to undertake private study to support lectures and seminars and to contribute actively to class discussion. During the course of the year you will undertake a research dissertation, which gives you the opportunity to carry out in-depth research into various topical areas of corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. You are encouraged to undertake work on a topic of your own choice. But, additionally, academic members of staff may suggest topics linked with research already underway in the Business School. You will then work under the guidance of a supervisor, who will provide further guidance on your research and submission of dissertation.
