This course is ideal if students have a strong interest in the commercial aspects of the construction industry and would like the confidence to operate in the difficult environment of contractual arrangements; the varying nature of construction, combined with the growing complexities of the industry, means that there is a demand for construction professionals who have the knowledge and skills to analyse the intricate problems that arise on most large projects; many disputes occur in construction because the partners do not have a fundamental understanding of the branch of law involving construction that would serve to reduce and resolve disputes.
Students will study the English legal systems, including contract law and tort law, and gain an understanding of how design and construction work is priced and how to control these costs; students will learn how to analyse the rights and liabilities of the parties involved in the construction process, and how to manage dispute resolution; students will develop a commercial awareness of inter-company relationships, as well as gaining a working knowledge of modern project management and risk management techniques in controlling construction and design work.
