About this course

The management of pain and anxiety is an essential skill in the practice of clinical dentistry and its associated specialties; conscious sedation forms a valuable adjunct in the practitioners armamentarium of skills, and varying sedatives have been used for many years to reduce patient anxiety, or to enable the patient to undergo potentially unpleasant clinical procedures; the course is designed to provide the clinical dentist/specialist with comprehensive training in standard techniques in conscious sedation, namely: Intravenous sedation using midazolam alone; inhalation sedation; oral/transmucosal sedation using benzodiazepines; clinicians have the opportunity to apply the clinical theory, practice and associated research to the provision of conscious sedation in general dental practice, with skills transferable to colleagues working in the secondary care setting; clinical experience is gained with practitioners highly experienced in the practice of conscious sedation, with the emphasis clearly on the practice of safe sedation using standard techniques appropriate to the primary care setting; this innovative, stimulating course is offered to practitioners throughout the UK and combines essential evidence based knowledge with hands-on clinical experience; during the course, students are expected to attend for up to 15 study/assessment days per year; students also need to allocate -day per week to carry out clinical work related to the programme and to undertake background reading, and coursework; the course also provides students with over 200 hours of verifiable CPD.
