Course Description
This programme provides a unique opportunity to study the development of theory, research and practice in the field of conflict resolution mediation. The MSc offers an in-depth study of the theoretical aspects of the field and provides an opportunity for reflective learning and application to practice. The programme is run by the Institute of Family Therapy (IFT) in collaboration with Birkbeck. The programme focuses on theories relevant to understanding the nature of conflict and the many forms of conflict intervention. These include social sciences, communication and human needs perspectives. The programme aims to provide you with a thorough understanding of contemporary writing and research in the fields. Prominent guest speakers and experienced practitoners are invited to enhance the student learning experience. In the past, these have included Bernie Mayer, Allan Barsky, Joseph Folger and Cheryl Picard. The programme provides the opportunity to consider cultural, social, ethical, legal and philosophical issues and perspectives through group discussion, as well as the chance to keep a learning profolio to chart your own journey of self-reflection. How issues of race, gender, sexuality, culture, class and disability affect conflict is examined, as well as how they relate to the effectiveuse of conflict resolution and mediation skills.

Assessment method
Year 1: 3000 word case study, 5000 word essay, a reflective journal. Year 2: case study, dissertation.
Entry Requirements
First degree (or at least second-class honours degree) and some experience in conflict resolution and mediation. Those with a relevant professional qualification and experience may be eligible following an interview and/or written paper considered by the course tutor. The Graduate Certificate in Conflict Resolution and Mediation Studies entitles applicants to apply for the MSc.
