The programme provides an intensive course in computing for graduates of other subjects, specifically tailored for individuals choosing a career in financial services; as well as gaining a broad knowledge of the subject, students acquire practical skills and have the opportunity to investigate certain areas of current research more deeply; for students who are new to the subject, the programme provides a foundation for a career in information technology (IT) for finance; for those already working in IT, it provides an opportunity to broaden knowledge and update skills specifically for finance while obtaining a formal qualification.
Students follow either the Java or the C++ pathways by supplementing core subjects such as: Financial markets; portfolio management; accounting and financial management; data and knowledge management; object-oriented design and programming; introduction to software engineering: tools and environments; with either programming in C++ or introduction to software development (Java); students also complete a project, comprising the design, development and evaluation of a major piece of software in the target application domain; a number of projects are available where students will be co-supervised by an industrial sponsor under arrangements made by the department.
