The course covers the application and development of devices such as PDAs, digital cameras, iPods, games consoles, mobile phones, designing the hardware and software; students also study medical image computing, multimedia systems, games programming, robotics, data communications and signal processing.
Year 1: Core modules: Programming for computer scientists: design of information structures; computer organisation and architecture; mathematics for computer scientists 1 and 2; professional skills; option from a wide selection from other departments. Year 2: Core modules: Digital communications and signal processing; computer system design; topics in database systems; options include reliability and fault tolerance; knowledge based systems; declarative programming; formal specification and verification; further automata; formal language and algorithm design; options from other departments including languages, business studies and bioinformatics. Year 3: Individual project: finance and accounting; options from 3rd year BSc course. Year 4: Group project; project management; options include: advanced specification methods; advanced compiler design; high performance computing; distributed multimedia systems; agent based systems; introduction to empirical modelling; future directions in computing; system life cycle management.
