Any AS/A2 course combination This course teaches you the principles of Computing so that you can understand new developments when they happen. The focus is the more technical aspects of computing. A large proportion of time is spent using computers - mainly programming and database work; this includes a substantial amount of project work. About 50% of your time will be spent on practical work; note that this is not a course about PC hardware or maintenance. AS COURSE Unit 1. Problem solving, programming, data representation and practical (60%) This unit looks at how computers work, how data is stored on a computer and how computers are programmed. Unit 2. Computer components, the stored program concept and the internet (40%) This unit looks at applications of computers in the modern world. Through this you will learn about topics such as databases, computer security and the internet. A2 COURSE This unit looks in more depth at the way computers work and the way they are programmed. Unit 3. Advanced Systems Development. This unit also looks in more detail at problem solving, programming, databases and networks. Unit 4. The Practical Project. You will systematically investigate the Computing needs of a real user, and then implement, test and document a system to meet those needs. The full syllabus can be found at DEPARTMENTAL RESOURCES All our rooms are equipped with 18-20 PCs. Books and magazines are available in the library. The following software is available for you: - 2010 MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) - MS Visual - Adobe CS5 - Access to web server running PHP Resources can be accessed from home via the Model Virtual Learning Environment. Modules 2 and 3 are assessed by 1 hour and 2 1/2 hours respectively written examinations. Module 1 is assessed by online exam for 2 hours. The Module 3 exam is based on the set programming exercise.
GCSE grade B in Maths. Average GCSE score of at least 5. You need to be able to organise your time, think logically and write clearly. Entry by: Interview
