This course covers the hardware, software and communications aspects of computer and electronic systems, and students choose to specialise in a particular area; emphasis is put on hands-on exercises to reinforce the theoretical concepts in the lectures; heavy use is put on industrial standard software packages such as Matlab, Mentor Graphics and Microsoft's Visual Development Studio; students gain a wide exposure to modern technologies including field programmable gate arrays, digital signal processors, advanced digital communication systems, C, C++, Java, computer networks, analogue and digital electronics.
Year 1: Core modules: engineering applications; management; engineering mathematics; analogue electronics; digital electronics; computer programming; computer-based engineering applications; microprocessor systems; computer architecture. Year 2: Core modules: Group project; business; advanced mathematics; communications principles; digital systems synthesis; object-oriented programming. Year 3: Major project; embedded microcontroller systems; management, marketing and quality; optional modules: digital signal processing; linear systems analysis; digital communications and networks; integrated circuit design; computational methods for artificial intelligence; advanced control; programmable logic controllers; laser technology; linear systems analysis; interaction of light with matter; advanced control; computational methods for artificial intelligence; laser beam manipulation; laser systems design; digital signal processing; computer systems; digital communications and networks; integrated circuit design; internet technology; multimedia systems design.

I was hoping a lot more to learn about programming in the real world. On the HND stream, you learn about programming on a very basic level mostly using VB.Net which is rarely used in the real world....more
