Course Description
The embedded computer can take many forms medical supervision, mobile autonomous robotics and environmental monitoring the actual use only being limited by the imagination of the individual. Such systems all have one thing in common, they are compact, self contained and designed with specific tasks in mind. The course takes on board the commonly heard phrase 'everything has a computer in it these days!'. This taught course comprises five course specific units and a subject integration engineering unit followed by a research project. The course specific units will enable the student to develop a body of knowledge informed by the forefront of Computer Network Technology research and development. The subject integration engineering unit is aimed at building understanding and application of quality, environmental and safety systems and their integration in engineering and business environments. The final MSc research based project includes a component of personal and professional development planning. The department facilitates and encourages projects that industry based. Course specific units studied: Agile Computer Systems, Communication Systems, Computer Systems, Electronic Design Automation, Programming.

Assessment method
We use a diverse set of assessment methods, including e-assessment. Units within the course are assessed both formatively and summatively via coursework, written examinations, phase tests, oral presentations, technical reports, case studies, laboratory activities and problem solving activities.
Entry Requirements
Entry will usually require one of the following: An honours degree in Engineering or a Science; An equivalent professional qualification e.g. Graduateship (or equivalent) of an appropriate professional body; An unclassified degree in Engineering or Science together with significant professional experience in relevant work; An equivalent qualification from a European Community country or another overseas country (see British Council publication 'The International Guide to Qualifications in Education') previous qualifications and experience which lead to the reasonable expectation that the student possesses appropriate knowledge and skills at Honours degree standard. Evidence of academic ability, relevant experience, motivation and capacity to benefit from the courses will be required. Admission directly to the MSc programme may also be permitted for students with a Postgraduate Diploma in an appropriate subject area. Applicants who believe they may have suitable learning or experience are advised to contact the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor in the first instance.
