The course aims to produce graduates with a balanced mix of technical and artistic skills; it is provided through both theoretical and practical study, including the use of industry-standard 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional graphics software; early stages of the course provide a strong foundation in the science, mathematics, design and information technology principles on which computer graphics technology is based; once students have mastered the technical background, they can then explore advanced computer graphics techniques such as character rigging, dynamics, particle systems, advanced rendering and digital compositing.
Core and optional modules include: Year 1: visual thinking or; mathematics and statistics; fundamental programming concepts; html programming and internet tools; introductory physics; visual structures; instrumentation principles for media technology; computer-generated imagery and sound 1; object-oriented programming with java. Year 2: computer-generated imagery 2; software development with java, advanced programming concepts or; visual basic; graphics software embedded language programming; introduction to multimedia design; computer animation; film and television studies; project design and investigation skills. Year 3: advanced CGI; technical direction in computer graphics; digital media editing and compositing; project; computer graphics and image processing; dissertation; option modules.
