The programme harmonises the disciplines of sports coaching, physical education teaching and sports development, whilst preparing graduates to drive both coach and physical education developments forward both as a profession and an academic discipline; the aims of the degree are to acquire the knowledge, understanding and practical experience of the concepts, theories and principles of coach education, sports coaching, teaching physical education and sports development/ leadership; in addition, intellectual and practical skills are developed in applied aspects of these areas; graduates from this degree are expected to gain employment in these fields, and also to become critical thinkers and independent learners.Year 1: Modules embracing elements such as �physical education in the National Curriculum�, �the introduction of sports science principles, fitness and health� and �foundations of coaching practice� are designed to increase knowledge, skills and understanding in sports coaching and teaching physical education in schools; this includes practical teaching and coaching. Year 2: Modules address learning processes in education, research and analysis in physical education and sport, whilst examining coaching theory and methods; building upon the 1st year an increasingly �international perspective� is adopted within modules; students also experience a placement module (including opportunities to work in the USA) which can be developed to suit career aspirations.Year 3: This year includes compulsory modules in �leadership� and �assessing, profiling and sharing quality provision�; students can also choose 2 modules to suit a chosen career path; those students who are interested in teaching physical education in schools may choose a module which focuses on the competencies needed for teaching; those interested in sports development may select modules addressing �sport and excellence� and/or �sport and disability�; sports coaches may choose �performance coaching�.
