This qualification introduces students to skills required for professionals in the built environment; the main focus is the underlying principles of construction technology, skills development and materials, properties and structures, and the context in which these are applied; students undertake real work projects either in the workplace (work-based learning) or through employer-led scenarios (work-related learning); the inclusion of real work projects should equip and assist learners to enhance their employment opportunities, and/or allows to prepare for a career change; this course improves both practical and academic skills to prepare students for a wide range or opportunities either in employment or onto a civil engineering degree course.

Examples: An introduction to technology and design; computer aided design (CAD) for civil engineers; civil engineering works; civil engineering mathematics; continuing personal and professional development; geotechnics I; learning and practical skills development; site and engineering surveying; site management and safety; structural method and analysis; work based learning A in the built environment; work based learning B in the built environment; work related learning in the built environment.
