Are you 19 years of age or over? Are you a qualified or practising hairdresser specialising in Caucasian/Asian hair? Do you want to gain all the necessary skills and knowledge to provide a variety of styling techniques on African type hair? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then this is the course for you. It will give you skills to provide, specialist chemical relaxing services, including corrective procedures. You will learn to to style and finish African and Caribbean women's hair, using a variety of techniques. You will develop the ability to analyse issues and problems that arise from relaxing hair, together with the ability to deal with different hair types, products and textured effects. You will learn to work confidently when relaxing hair. You will also become familiar with factors, such as client requirments, hair length and density, hair / scalp condition and previous treatments that might affect the service.
You will gain an understanding of different types of relaxing products, including Lye, no Lye, pre and post relaxer treatments. You will learn about neutralising shampoos and barrier products, like creams to prevent scalp and skin irritation.
You will learn professional techniques in hair and skin analysis - as this is an important aspect to consider before completing any chemical treatment. You will also be trainined in the use of curling tongs/irons, straightners, heated rollers, flat irons, thermal irons, thermal stoves and other relevant tools. You will have to carry out a range of practical tasks and small assignments in order to achieve this Award.
You are also encouraged to invite clients in, so you can complete your assessments on live models.
Applicants should be qualified in hairdressing at Level 2. Others need at least 5 years industrial experience. Communication skills are essentail and applicants must purchase a small hairdressing kit, with an optional text book (contact Newham college for approximate costs). Students wear all black, with flat black closed shoes during practical sessions, applicants must budget for these.
