INSTITUTION PROFILE

City University Overview

City University Overview Image
City's approach to education draws on more than 100 years of tradition tracing its origins back to 1894. The University gained its Royal Charter, and took the name The City University, in 1966. City has a strong focus on postgraduate education with around 40% of students on postgraduate programmes. Taught programmes leading to the degrees of Master of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of Law, Master of Health Management and to the Postgraduate Diploma qualification provide a structured programme of study. The programmes are designed to meet the needs of graduates working or intending to work in industry, commerce and public services, although many students also undertake such programmes in preparation for study for a research degree.

The University has more than 40 research centres, groups and units, bringing together expertise from various schools and departments in key areas, making these prestigious academic groups and excellent base for postgraduate study. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the Higher Education Funding Council for England rated 13 of City's research areas as being of 'international' or 'national' excellence.

Facilities
The University is based in the heart of London with access to all aspects of life in the capital city including the Square Mile, The Inns of Court, the headquarters of financial and professional institutions, major arts complexes and media offices, teaching hospitals and specialist medical research centres.

The £50m Cass Business School Building opened in 2002 and the new building for the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Language and Communication Science opened in 2004.

All students have access to general computing facilities as well as more specialist provisions according to their field of study. E-learning has become part of mainstream teaching and learning and City has invested in a campus-wide IT infrastructure and established an E-learning unit.
