About City And Guilds Of London Art School

Overview
City And Guilds Of London Art School Overview Image

"Essentially, our uniqueness resides in the extent to which we recognise and foster a vital interrelation between technical skills and creative invention.

Realising one's ambition in the complex world of art requires resolve as well as imagination, but success is more achievable in this small school than in any other institution I know" - Tony Carter, Principal

The City & Guilds of London Art School has been in existence since 1879. It is committed to the skills and traditions of Art and Craft practice and is strategically well placed within easy reach of London’s cultural centres. Thanks to our location next to Kennington Tube Station, the capital's museums and galleries are right on our doorstep. The working ambience at the School is intimate and friendly; the staff to student ratio (1:12) is exceptional and ensures that technical and tutorial guidance is second to none.

Our aim is to deliver the legacy and standards of traditional skills into the most intelligent and intelligible forms of contemporary practice, by way of programmed courses and skill-based teaching. We prioritise a craft base of practice in all subject areas and continue to use tradition as a dynamic force rather than a conservative one.

The School is an independent art college offering MA degrees and postgraduate-level Diploma courses. All students receive intensive tuition and the individual attention which they would not necessarily receive in a larger institution. The School prides itself on its unique ambience where the informal, lively atmosphere and small class sizes combine to create a community of working artists.

Many graduating students from the School go on to teach, or have distinguished careers as artists in their own right, as well as working in public or commercial art galleries. Others establish their own studios and workshops; they achieve independence and respect as professionals exhibiting and selling their work and skills. Conservators often gain employment within private practices, museums, or continue with further study. Carving students gain employment in well established workshops and institutions whilst others establish their own studios and workshops.
