About this course

Students are able to take an intercalated year in industry between years 3 and 4; transfer to the biomedical chemistry degree stream (BF91) is possible at any point during the 1st and 2nd years.

Modules

Year 1: Foundation mathematics for chemists; foundations of chemistry; biological sciences laboratory; proteins; genes and genetics; introduction to inorganic chemistry I; introduction to inorganic chemistry II; mechanism of organic chemical reactions; introduction to organic chemistry II; chemistry laboratory and assessed work. Year 2: Structural applications of spectroscopy; chemistry laboratory; organmetallic ligands and bonds; mechanism and stereochemistry in organic chemistry; aromatic heterocyclic chemistry; organic synthesis; foundations of electrochemistry and properties of solutions; principles of co-ordination chemistry; introduction to biological chemistry; key skills; molecular biology, enzymology for biochemists; protein structure and function; biological sciences laboratories: techniques laboratory; structure and function of eukaryotic genomes. Year 3: Core: bio-inorganic chemistry; kinetics and mechanism of solution reactions; structure elucidation by means of nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry; surface and colloid chemistry; molecular pharmacology; extended laboratory; neurobiology; immunology; bioenergetics; cell signalling; options: introduction to polymer science; reactions of transition metals in solution; organometallic reactions and catalysis; UV spectroscopy; photochemistry and radiation chemistry; understanding organic synthesis; selectivity in organic synthesis; enzymes and natural product biosynthesis; molecular interactions in chemistry and biology; basic mollecular modelling. Year 4: Interdisciplinary research project; research methodologies; options: synthetic chemistry I (organic); synthetic chemistry II (metallo-organic); synthetic III (supramolecular and macromolecular); electrochemical and nanotechnology; advanced medicinal chemistry; biological perspectives on human disease; advanced immunology; protein targeting; bacterial pathogenicity; modern approaches to vaccination; oncology; structural molecular biology; exploiting innovations in biology; biological clocks.
