This degree programme is designed to encourage students to learn and develop skills and techniques, for using and manipulating clay in its various states; assignments on the course are based on the conviction that an understanding of studio materials results primarily from the tactile engagement with them; students on this programme find it possible to become a skilled specialist practitioner whether it be through hand skills such as throwing, coiling, pinching or slab building or methods of batch producing pottery such as mould making and slip casting; students are also encouraged to develop the surfaces of their work through experimentation and mixing of their own glazes or the use of a wide range of different firing techniques such as gas reduction and raku.
Year 1: Core modules; drawing development; introduction to materials and processes; design for industry; artist/designer maker; professional practice and personal development planning; contexts of practice 1. Year 2: Core modules; sustainable practice; public realm; enterprise and professional practice; personal project; external design; work based learning/internship preparation; contexts of practice 2; work based learning (experience and evaluation). Year 3: Core modules; external project/internship; research, experimentation and development; creative and professional development; contextualisation; creative and professional conclusion; complementary studies.
