PhD Studentships and Bursaries
Central has an institutional studentship/bursary scheme for research degree students, administered by the Research Degrees Committee. These are competitive awards, made on the basis of the extent to which the research proposal is seen to offer genuine enhancement to the discipline. These awards may contribute towards research costs, or may be used as partial fee offset.
Studentships (allowing for the award of up to £3,000-4,000 per annum) include: up to two Beatrice Lillie studentships for researchers in music theatre or comedy; up to two Elsie Fogerty studentships for practice-based researchers; for 2006-7 entry only the Raymond Mander and Joe Mitchenson studentship for a researcher in theatre historiography.
Bursaries (allowing for the award of up to 0.5 of annual fees) include: up to two Central School Research Bursaries for experienced practitioners; one International Research Student Bursary.
All applicants for PhD study at Central will, at point of interview, be considered for any award for which their proposed research field or previous experience makes them eligible. No separate application will therefore be required.
In support of their case for bursary support, candidates will be invited to comment on:
- the need for the research in relation to the particular field of practice/enquiry;
plans for dissemination of the candidate's practice/work beyond the completion of the thesis
- the potential impact of the research and its outcomes.
Where possible, all offers of studentships/bursary support will be made at point of offer of a place. Funding will normally be offered for the duration of the registration period, subject to satisfactory progression.
