Cardiff University is internationally recognised as being among the very top tier of Britain's research intensive universities and is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading universities. Founded in 1883, Cardiff's vision is to be a world-leading university and its international reputation is reflected in the profile of our academic staff and in our cosmopolitan student body. The University attracts students from more than 100 overseas countries and our thriving postgraduate community currently numbers over 7,000 students - some 28 per cent of our student body.

Cardiff is internationally recognised as being one of Britain's major teaching and research universities and is a member of the Russell Group, the UK's top 20 research intensive universities. The Research Assessment exercise 2008 showed that world-leading research is being undertaken throughout Cardiff University. In addition to the benefits our research brings to society, our research contributes significantly to the high quality of teaching.

Cardiff was ranked 7th among the Top 50 European Cities by Foreign Direct Investment (fDi) magazine in its 2008/9 survey, and was also ranked 2nd among the Top 10 Small European Cities. The judging criteria included factors such as quality of life, relocation appeal, cost and infrastructure.

The University's Cathays Park campus, which is home to twenty-four academic schools, is located right in the heart of the civic centre and only a five-minute walk from the main shopping area; the Heath Park campus, home to five medicine and healthcare-related schools, shares a site with the University Hospital of Wales and is located in a suburb approximately one mile north of the Cathays Park campus.
