Bridgwater College has a regional and national reputation as an award winning college with a range of prestigious prizes and designations from the government and professional bodies. Bridgwater College was one of the first three colleges in England to receive the Ofsted designation ‘Outstanding’ and in addition has four Centres of Vocational Excellence; for Automotive Engineering, Early Years Education, Travel & Tourism and Residential Care. We are also one of just six colleges in the South West to have Beacon College status conferred by the Department for Education and Skills, and the only college in the country to have received 11 Beacon Awards in different areas, including International Student Support, Early Years and Science.
Bridgwater College has a broad and varied curriculum across four faculty areas; Arts and Technology, Humanities and Science, Business and Professional Studies and Land-based Studies. The Land-based curriculum is delivered at the dedicated Cannington Centre which includes a 160-hectare commercial farm, brand new Animal Management Centre, an equestrian centre, hacking track and nine-hole, 18-tee golf course. For those studying Horticulture and Landscape Design there are state-of-the-art glasshouses and heritage walled gardens, all situated within the grounds of a historic medieval priory. Bridgwater College’s Learning Resources Centre has over 60,000 books, journals and publications supporting all areas of the curriculum, with plenty of quiet study areas and a suite of computers with Internet access. Other facilities include photocopiers and scanners as well as multi-media services for AV, binding and reprographic requirements. Extensive use is made of thin client technology, enabling remote access for students working or studying at home.
Situated in the rural county of Somerset, Bridgwater is a market town surrounded by the Quantock Hills - a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Somerset Levels and historic attractions such as Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor and Dunster Castle are all nearby, as are the major cities of Bath, Bristol and Exeter. The town is known as the ‘Home of Carnival’, and the November parade attracts more than 130,000 visitors from all over the UK and Europe every autumn.
Excellent road and rail links make access to Bristol, Taunton and London relatively easy. There are regular train services from the South West and Bristol to Bridgwater train station, which is just a 10 minute walk from the College. Bristol is the nearest airport, about 40 minutes away by car.
Facilities include: St Mark’s Centre and a Children's Centre designated for Childcare and Early Years students, and awarded Early Excellence status by the government. There is also a new Health & Fitness Centre providing dedicated facilities for students of Sports Science and Public Services, plus modern science labs and forensic rooms; a Media and Business Centre with TV studio and editing suites, and an Automotive Centre with specialist equipment.
The College offers a wide range of courses including: Computing, Engineering, Road and Race Car Technology, Automotive Management, Forensic Science, Public Services with Outdoor Education, Sports Science, Business, Early Years, Wildlife and Countryside Conservation, Sports Turf and Golf Course Management, Agriculture and professional Management, Accountancy and Taxation courses.
