London’s history stretches back a millennium to the arrival of the Romans in Britain. Its hidden past and present – whether wells, pubs, dark alleys, or secret societies – have always been a source of inspiration for writers. We’ll read a panoply of recent fiction, science fiction, non-fiction, and poetry about what’s underground, overground and in the ground, starting with Bernardine Evaristo’s tale of Roman London and running through Sam Selvon’s tale of Windrush London to China Miéville’s fantastical undercity. We’ll compare Sarah Waters’ and Sukhdev Sandhu’s night visions, and Tom Bolton will walk us through London’s lost rivers in his contemporary journey across the city. A full reading list will be available with your confirmation of enrolment.
