This course is for those who wish to gain a thorough understanding biology through both a practical and theoretical approach. Students who study biology with interests in current developments in biological sciences as well as relevant TV documentary series would benefit from the course being able to develop a broader knowledge of biology. It is designed to develop an understanding of biological facts, together with an appreciation of their significance in new and changing situations. The specification has a strong scientific content with practical sessions complementing the theory. Topics covered in the first year include biology and disease, exchange and transport systems and genetic diversity. The second year of the course builds on these topics and includes ecology, anatomy and physiology, genetics and photosynthesis. They may progress to higher education to study one of a variety of biological science courses including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, marine biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, environmental studies or botany. This can lead to employment in these areas in research, teaching, management or industry.
