In this course, students will learn advanced skills in preparation for a career in public services, community or voluntary work. It is aimed at people who ultimately wish to pursue a career in the uniformed public services. The course provides a thorough understanding of the fundamental aspects of the public services. It does not however, provide guaranteed employment in the public services, as most applicants will also be required to pass relevant entry tests. They will need to pass a total of 180 credits over 2 years. The following units are all mandatory: government, policies and the public services (10 credits), leadership and teamwork in the public services (15 credits), citizenship, diversity and the public services (15 credits), public services data interpretation (10 credits), enhancing public services delivery through the use of ICT (10 credits). They will also need to pass a further 120 credits from a range of 23 option units. These include physical preparation, health and lifestyle for the public services (10 credits), outdoor and adventurous expeditions (10 credits), crime and its effect on society (10 credits), planning and management of major incidents (10 credits), career planning for public services (5 credits), behaviour in public sector employment (5 credits), custodial care services (10 credits), aspects of the legal system and law making process (10 credits), practical team sports (10 credits), exercise health and lifestyle (10 credits), international institutions and human rights (5 credits), security procedures in the public services (10 credits). On successful completion of the course they could apply for employment in the public service industry, or progress to a higher level of study such as a degree in criminology, sociology or even disaster management.
Students must have four GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English.
