In this course, students will gain a general understanding of art and design, in preparation for a higher course of study. They will study areas including contextual references in art and design, visual communication, 3D visual communication, using ideas to explore, develop and produce art and design, building an art and design portfolio, working in the art and design industry, working with graphic design briefs, working with visual arts briefs. They will creatively respond to project briefs through learning how to use a variety of both 2D and 3D media techniques such as painting, drawing, printing, sculpture and ceramics. They will uncover and respond to historical and contemporary art and design influences that will inspire and shape their own project work along with exploring aspects of graphic design including poster design, typography, using studio materials and elements of computer generated artwork. After successful completion of the course they may progress to BTEC level 3 extended diplomas in art and design, such as fine art, graphics, interactive media, 3D/interior, fashion design or fashion promotion.
