The course enables graduates working or living with people with autism to develop their understanding of the autism spectrum; students reflect on current theory relating to autism, and evaluate how they might use new learning to develop their own practice; during the course students study and evaluate how autism impacts on thinking and learning, and the way that affects being in the social and material worlds; students should also position autism within wider disability debates; this course improves student's knowledge and understanding of the autism spectrum; it is also an essential qualification if the student is interested in developing autism services; it may be possible to study full-time; however, the majority of students are part-time, and teaching is normally during weekends and evenings; students can accumulate modules to achieve a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma; to gain an MA students must successfully complete a research methods module and a project.
Appreciating different styles of thinking and learning; assessment and good practice - providing quality experiences for people with autism; autism, challenging behaviour and communication; sensory perceptual issues in autism; the learning characteristics associated with children and young people with autism; assessment and good practice: qualities of teaching and learning relevant to children and young people with autistic spectrum disorders; sensory-perceptual issues in autism; case study; work-based learning.
