Year 1: A broad range of topics in astronomy, core physics and applicable mathematics; students gain experience in using telescopes, charge-coupled device cameras and image processing packages, learn programming techniques and be encouraged to develop an intuitive approach to problem solving. Year 2: Physics of the planets, sun and interplanetary medium, as well as other physics modules: electromagnetism, quantum physics, thermal and statistical physics, condensed matter, and optical physics; practical work is an important part of the year; outdoor practicals include measuring the proper motion of asteroids and comets, the albedo of Jupiter�s moons and spectroscopy of nebulae. Year 3: Year at a major astronomical research centre or international observatory in the Canary Islands. Final year: Cosmology; galactic astrophysics; computational physics and the physics of fluids; students also work on a theoretical, practical or computational project.
