The research strategy of the division is to elucidate molecular, immunological and physiological mechanisms of asthma, allergy and related respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; to identify new therapeutic targets; to test new treatment modalities; and to provide insights on the management of adult and paediatric patients with severe lung diseases, including respiratory failure; the division focuses on basic mechanisms that underlie the genesis, propagation and sequelae of airways inflammation; an understanding of the mechanisms of anti-inflammatory drug action; and management of the very ill patient at the bedside; the critical mass in the division creates a synergy not otherwise possible and offers opportunities for interactions while still preserving scientific independence.
