The course is designed for students with a broad-based interest in the arts who may not have studied formally before; if the student likes reading books, watching films, exploring history, and then talking about it all, this course is suitable; this programme provides a coherent progression route from certificate level, via diploma, to degree qualifications; students have used this programme as a way into teaching English or history.
Years 1 and 2: Research methods and study skills; introduction to film studies; poetry and society; fiction and society; representations of women in contemporary film; love, sex, and the Victorians. Years 3 and 4: The American dream in film; the American dream in literature; in search of the Templars; looking critically at reality TV; post-colonial literature; Tony Harrison's public poetry; 20th -Century European literature; literary modernism; the Middle Ages goes to the movies; 17th-century women's writing; introduction to Shakespeare; the age of the Crusades.
