On this course you will begin to develop a practical and theoretical understanding of art and science collaboration. Considering various models for collaboration, we will explore the criteria for artistic and scientific success, and look at artists who work with science such as The Tissue in Art Project, Eduardo Kac, Adam Zaretsky, Stelarc, and Kira O'Reilly. We will discuss the philosophy of science and how this might impact on artwork; consider some of the ethical implications of working with science; and look at art as a means of developing public understanding of science. We will also consider the practical skills necessary to enable you to progress with your own collaborations, covering issues such as health and safety, and funding.
An interest in collaborative projects between artists/designers and scientists, and in developing artistic practices. The course is not specific to any field of art or design. No prior experience is necessary. Suitable for practice-based and theory-based students.
